The EU Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 introduces a lifecycle approach to batteries. Companies are expected to understand and document more than the battery itself: the responsible economic operator, manufacturing information, performance and durability, carbon footprint, recycled content, responsible sourcing, conformity and end-of-life responsibilities. The exact data set depends on the battery category and the role a company has in the value chain.

For electric vehicle batteries, light means of transport batteries and industrial batteries above 2 kWh, an electronic battery passport is required for batteries placed on the EU market or put into service from 18 February 2027. The passport must be linked to a unique identifier and QR code, use structured and machine-readable data, and remain accurate, complete and up to date. Access also needs to reflect the rights and legitimate interests of different actors, from the public to repairers, remanufacturers, recyclers and authorities.

For companies, this means building a reliable information flow rather than creating a document once. Data needs clear ownership, evidence, version history, update routines and links between the battery, its use, its next-life decisions and its recycling route. When a battery is repurposed or remanufactured, a new passport must be linked to the original record.
